New Icehouse a big hit

WILL BRODIE  -  The Age

February 12, 2010 - 3:47PM

Australian ice sports have received a huge boost on the eve of the Winter Olympics with the opening of the Icehouse complex at Docklands.

At the launch of the gleaming new $58 million, two-rink centre, the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, Minister for Sport, Recreation and Youth Affairs James Merlino said the Icehouse would provide a "quantum shift" for winter sports in Australia.

The centre, officially opened today by Premier John Brumby, features a specialised winter sports training gym and medical facilities and is the new home of the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia.

Mr Brumby hailed the opening of the centre as a "sensational day for our city, for our state", and a crucial aspect of his determination to make Melbourne the "best sports city in the world".

The opening featured live exhibitions of curling, figure skating, speed skating and ice hockey, accompanied by big screen imagery and a voiceover fully utilising a $1 million audiovisual system.

When fireworks cascaded from the ceiling at the completion of the opening ceremony, hundreds of young skaters took to the ice, indicating the importance of public use of the complex. It will be open to recreational skaters from 6am, 364 days a year, providing the first permanent rink near the CBD since the demise of St Kilda's St Moritz in the 1980s.

Ice sports have long relied on a single rink at suburban Oakleigh, following the demise of other rinks at Ringwood, Dandenong and Footscray.

The Icehouse will be of particular importance to ice hockey in Victoria, which has been unable to capitalise on periods of popularity, including a stint on ABC television in the 1980s.

Glenn Grandy, President of the Blackhawks Ice Hockey Club, said that the Icehouse would bring players back to the sport, and capture a new generation of adherents for the sport.

‘‘Hopefully it will just mean a further development to all the players, kids coming into the sport... to bring everything up to the standard we’ve wanted it to for the last twenty or thirty years."

Mr Grandy is hoping the centre will mean participation in his sport by young people will "go through the roof".

Icehouse general manager Darren Walls, after dutifully listing the names of the dignitaries present, exclaimed "we're here and how exciting is it!" to loud applause from the large crowd of ice sport enthusiasts.

Mr Walls compared the likelihood of the centre being built to "recruiting Jamaicans to a bobsled team".

He praised the contribution of Rino Grollo to the fruition of the project, saying the building icon had said "just do it" when the idea was pitched to him.

Update - NJT 2010 - WJC TURKEY

E-mail Print PDF

Australia has moved into the Gold Medal game with a 4 - 3 overtime win against North Korea.  In a see-sawing game, the Aussies fought back to get a 3-2 lead in the 2nd period only to see the North Koreans tie it up with less than nine minutes left.

Then in the overtime period, the Aussies scored after just 1:56 to take it.

The Aussies now take on Iceland who whooped New Zealand 4 - 0 in the other semi.

Good luck in the final boys.

NJT 2010 - WJC Turkey

The NJT has played two games so far and are sitting top of their group with 2 W's.

The 1st game was an 11 - 1 whitewash of Bulgaria with our own Jack McCoy scoring two goals and grabbing a helper as well.

The 2nd game was against our southern cousins New Zealand.  NZ has improved markedly in recent years, (Australia still holds a World Record with a 58 - 0 drubbing over NZ at the 1987 WSC) and was obviously looking for a win over the Aussies, but this was not the day and the result was a 5 - 1 win for Australia.

Australia Announces National U18 Youth Team for 2010

Today IHA’s 2010 National U18 Team Officials announced the players for IHA's 2010 National U18 Team who will be competing at the IIHF 2010 World U18 Division II Championships in Kiev, Ukraine from the 22nd-28th of March 2010.

Australia was promoted back to Division II after a fantastic 2009 championship in Chinese Taipei where Australia dominated the competition on their way to winning the Gold Medal. In the four games Australia played in Taipei, they scored a combined 63 goals for and only 3 goals against in 4 games.

Head Coach, Pier Martin, stated - "We feel we have an excellent 2010 team who have the same ability to take on the challenge in Division II on achieving our goal of not only remaining in Division II, but also potentially being a contender for a medal. As a team, we have a mix of players who will be expected to play different roles and have high expectation the selected players will excel in these roles"

Team Manager, Paul Johnston, stated - ""Preparations for the trip are well underway and we are in good shape for our journey to Kiev. With the addition of Shane McLeod, as the Strength and Conditioning coach, and the returning staff from 2009, I am confident that this years' trip will be a huge success. We have the right people, with the right skills and experience, in the right places."

IHA President and Team Chef de Mission, Don Rurak, stated - "This is an extremely important championship for our U18 team in terms of world ranking as the IIHF will be finalising the restructuring of the World Championships for 2011 and future. The majority of players have been participants of IHA’s and the IIHF’s Player Development Camps and will form the nucleus for another outstanding team. As the boys progress through their development, Australia continues to gain strength from year-to-year with a number of players achieving success beyond our expectations.”

The team will be hosting their pre-championship training camp at IHA’s Player Development and National Team Training Centre in Newcastle, Australia, prior to departing for the Ukraine for a further two days of acclimatization and the final stages of their preparation. The camps greatly assist with honing the final stages of the team's tactics and mental state in their final preparation.

Six teams (in order of ranking), Ukraine, Slovenia, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain and Australia, will be participating for an exciting and exhilarating Championship. Ukraine was relgated from Division I in 2009 and Australia were promoted from Division III.

With five returning players from the 2009 Gold Medal Squad, these players will bring the much needed international experience and mentorship to the younger core of players being added to the roster.
